How to Score Good Marks in Exams?

Students want to study but they get distracted through various social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Sometimes, they do not understand the topic, so they start getting bored. Sometimes they do understand everything, but they cannot concentrate for more than half an hour. Do you also face these problems? If yes, this blog post will change your mindset, help you increase focus, and inform students about all possible ways in which they can maximize their scores.

Scoring good marks is an art that anyone can learn. If you want to score good marks, then you need the combination of smart study, the right guidance, time management, and a disciplined approach. Here’s the guide to scoring good marks.

Plan Your Day

This is the first step towards getting good marks. Toppers always plan their day. First of all, students have to divide their day into two slots, one for study and one for other work, such as entertainment, using social media platforms, and doing different activities.

They should study for at least 4 to 6 hours on a daily basis. This much time is more than sufficient for them. Recent studies have shown that studying for long hours is not as fruitful as people think because it negatively impacts the retention capacity of students.

Set a Daily and Weekly Target

Setting the target is very important. Students should set two types of targets-one daily and the other weekly. Suppose your target for the day is to read a complete chapter of your book and your weekly target can be to read 6 chapters. Always assess whether your target has been achieved or not.

In the morning they should prepare a timetable for the day like how much time they will dedicate to different subjects. At the end of the day, they should ensure that they are achieving the target. They should write “achieved” or “not achieved” where they have mentioned the day’s target. Similarly, they should achieve their weekly targets as well.

Understand Your Syllabus

Understanding the syllabus is the most important thing and students often ignore this part. They should break down their syllabus into parts and then cover those parts in a defined timeframe.  It is very important that students only cover those things that are mentioned in the syllabus.

Often at times, students get carried away in their quest to acquire knowledge which results in studying topics that are not relevant from an exam perspective. So it is important to know how much you need to study and what not to.  So the role of the syllabus is very critical for a student.

Focus on Understanding Concepts and Not on Rot Learning

It has been seen that students prefer to mug up their syllabus. They do not want to understand the core concept. When the question is twisted, they are not able to answer it. Students should focus on quality learning and for that, they can take the help of their parents, teachers, friends, ChatGpt, Google, and YouTube.

If students know the correct prompt, then ChatGpt can be their one-stop solution. It is important to stay updated on the latest technologies. Apart from ChatGpt, other AIs like Gemini, Perplexity, and Deepseek are also helpful for students.

Think, Imagine and Learn

Thinking is also a valuable part that adds to a student’s score. Currently, students do not think whatever they have read or have been taught to them. Whenever they have free time, they should try to recall what they have studied today. It has been seen that those students who are in the habit of thinking often, score high in comparison to normal students.

Einstein rightly said “ Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere. Try to imagine whatever you have read in picture or story form so that it stays imprinted in your mind for a longer period.

Make Short Notes

Short notes are the key to high scores. The notes should be crisp and easily digestible. It becomes very difficult for a student to memorize those bulky books at the last moment. Therefore it is recommended that students should prepare their handwritten notes that they can easily revise. Notes should be in handwritten format and not printable format.

 Improve Your Focus and Memory

(use Feynman Technique, Mnemonics, and Mindmaps, Pomodoro Technique, Avoid Multi-tasking)

Most students find it difficult to remember things, they should use different methods to activate different nerves of their brain. Using Feynman and Pomodoro techniques can be very helpful for students. Let’s decode these techniques.

Feynman Technique

  1. Pick a topic or concept that you want to study.
  2. Explain that topic/concept to yourself in simple terms. (explain it to yourself in such a simple way that even a 5-year-old child can understand it)
  3. Use stories or examples to remember it for a long time.

Pomodoro Technique

  1. Choose any subject or topic that you want to study.
  2. Study that subject or topic for 30 minutes and take a 5-minute break.
  3. After the break, continue studying the same topic for 30 minutes and take 5 minutes break.
  4. Repeat this until you achieve your study goal of the day.

It is believed that taking a break every half an hour increases the efficiency of the students, therefore it is recommended that students should study for shorter periods with frequent breaks.

Another useful technique is using mind maps or storytelling. The human brain is better at remembering things in picture form or in the form of stories. Try to create a story out of the subject or topic that you have read so that it imprints in your mind forever.

Students can also use Mnemonic techniques where they make sentences or phrases to remember or mug up topics that are very complex otherwise to remember. All these techniques are very effective and the latest research has confirmed their efficiency and productivity.

Maintaining Consistency

A river current cuts down large mountains mainly due to its consistency. Students should not let even a single day pass where they have not studied anything. There will be days when they do not want to study and it happens with everyone, but smart people even at those times would read something.

There will be days when students do not want to read anything, at that time students can read story books, novels, or watch an informative video on YouTube but do not let it pass without doing any of the above-mentioned things.

Revise Regularly

How often should one revise and what is the right time to revise is the question students often ask. The general rule is whatever you study for the first time you will remember 25% of it. The first revision will ensure that you remember 50% of it, 2nd revision ensures 75% retention and 3rd revision ensures that you will remember 100% of the topic you have studied.

So ideally you should revise any topic 3 times in order to retain it in your mind for a very long time. The best time to revise any topic is early morning. If students are able to revise a topic between 4 a.m.- 6 a.m., they will remember it for a very long time.

According to Hindu scriptures, in the early morning, cosmic energy is at its peak and therefore whatever students study, they recall it for life. This early morning phase is known as Brahma Muharata and its importance is mentioned in Rig Veda.

Give Mock Tests or Solve Sample Papers

Students should assess their performance by solving mock tests. Many students do not understand its importance so they keep on studying and when they go to the exam hall, they get nervous and forget the answers to the questions that are very easy. The reason is that they didn’t practice the mock tests in a time-bound manner. Solving mock test papers in a specific time frame is very important as it acquaints students with real-time exam conditions.

Take Small Breaks

As previously discussed in Pomodoro Techniques, how important breaks are for the students? It refreshes their mind and even their focus increases many times. But it is also important that students do not get carried away with the breaks. With too many breaks your mind will not be able to sit in a place for very long.

Meditate and Exercise to Increase Focus

While students’ main focus remains on studies, they are hardly involved in any physical exercise. Exercise of mind and body is a necessity for students especially these days when obesity and unhealthy lifestyle has surrounded us from all directions. Students should take half an hour of time from their schedule towards exercise. If they can perform cardio exercises in that half an hour, they will feel energetic and light throughout the Day.

Peace of mind is equally important, In fact, more than good health. In modern times, students often get troubled by unwanted stress, meditation can be a way to remove stress. Half an hour of meditation will remove all your stress. It in fact acts as a stress buster for many students. Researchers have found that 15 minutes of meditation has unlocked those parts of the brain that have been found inactive before.

So you need to dedicate one hour to meditation and exercise. 30 minutes of meditation and 30 minutes of exercise is what it takes to achieve good health. In meditation, students can close their eyes and focus on their breath, when it comes in and when it goes out. For cardio exercise, students can do running, dancing, skipping, and weight lifting. Students should also consider joining a Gym if possible to achieve a good physique.

Conclusion

Merely studying for hours will not fetch good marks, in fact, it will give you unwanted stress and trouble your mind and body. Proper planning, time management, practice, and exercise are all you need to inculcate in your schedule to achieve the best score. You should also try to accompany people who are like-minded and intellectual and avoid students who are dumb, and fool and are likely to drag you down to their level.

Students often ignore discussing topics with an intellectual person as they think they will get more knowledge than they possess if they discuss it. In reality, that is not true. Discussions with friends and colleagues often provide students with valuable insights and they tend to remember that topic for a very long time.

Studying without using logic is of no use. Whenever you study a topic you should always ask the following question- What, Why/How, and where. The day students start learning concepts with logic, they will not possess a brain less than that of Einstein.

Students should follow these tips to get good marks. Positivity is the key. Always remember that you can score good marks and in fact you can be a top scorer, this much confidence you should possess. This blog post can change your life if you allow it. Just remember one thing, Rome was not built in a day, so don’t get discouraged when you don’t see the results in the first few days, it is a process and within a week you will see the difference.
